The Austin Winter Series Open-Hat tournament will be held on Saturday, January 12. The schedule is as follows:
8am- Tournament Set-up
10:00am- Player Check-in
11:00am- First Round of Open Pairs
1:30pm- Hat Drawing
2:00pm- Hat Tournament
4:00pm- Dinner at the Tavern
6:00pm- Gym Opens at Austin Recreation center
7:00pm- Open Pairs Finals
10:00- Gym Closes
The tournament will feature both a traditional competitive division and an experimental "hat" or random division. The traditional "open" pairs division will feature seeded rounds of competitive freestyle. The time will be between three and four minutes to accomodate teams preparing their routines for this year's FPA Worlds.
The hat division will be a Berlin-style seeded hat that mixes freestylers of all levels of play. Everyone will have the chance to play to improvised routines or "jam." The judging system will be an improvised 3-2-1 format with Difficulty, Artistic Impression, and Execution multiplied respectively. The expectation is risk and experimentation. It is a no pressure format to encourage people to try their best new moves in an open environment.
The tournament will be held on the of Zilker's rugby field, adjacent to the Pecan Grove Picnic Area and alongside Barton Springs Road (across the street from the great lawn). Jamming will begin as early as Wednesday, January 9 and continue through the next week, but competition will be held on Saturday. Saturday night will also feature an indoor jam session at the lamar location of the Austin Recreation Center (1301 Shoal Creek Blvd. @ North Lamar, adjacent to House Park) , which will also serve as a backup location in case of inclement weather.
The entrance fee to the event will be $40 which includes entrance to both divisions, the party, and a player's package with an Austin Disc Club disc, a tournament shirt, and Yarnails.
